“We cannot allow such a vital link with our homeland to be severed. The Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro is more than a simple diplomatic representation; it is a symbol of our connection, of our identity. Closing its doors would be like erase part of our history, our culture, our very essence.

We must fight to keep it open, not just for convenience, but for the preservation of our heritage and the essential support it offers to the Lebanese community here in Brazil. We cannot remain silent in the face of this threat. United, we will defend our consulate and everything it represents!”

Introduction
Welcome to Confelibra

Under the leadership of the newly elected president, Dr. Roger Hanna Bassil, the National Confederation of Lebanese-Brazilian Entities (CONFELIBRA) as soon as it learned of the decision taken by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and immigrants 02/28/2024 to include in the ministerial council agenda the closure of some embassies in Latin America and the historic Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro, due to the strange reason of cuting costs, a phenomenal and brilliant campaign to prevent the closure of the Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro started. Discover how we joined forces and overcame challenges to achieve a meaningful victory.

The Challenge

Defending our values and our history

“Faced with the imminent threat of closing the Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro, we could not remain inert. This was not just an attack on an institution, but rather a blow against our history, our identity and our community. The Consulate is not just a building or a bureaucracy; it is the beating heart of the Lebanese diaspora in Brazil. It is the place where our ancestors disembarked in search of new opportunities, where they found support and solidarity to build a new life in Brazilian lands. It is a vital link that unites our two nations, strengthening cultural, economic and human ties for decades.

Closing the Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro would erase part of our history, disrespect the legacy of our ancestors and seriously harm our community. We couldn’t allow that to happen. We had to come together, raise our voices and show the Lebanese government the vital importance of this Consulate for us, Lebanese and descendants, here in Brazil. It is not just about keeping an institution open, but about preserving our identity, our culture, our memory and our Lebanese pride. Together, we could and should fight for the permanence of the Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro. Our history, our community and our future depend on it.

And that’s how the National Confederation of Lebanese-Brazilian Entities (Confelibra) started the campaign not to close the Consulate General of Lebanon in Rio de Janeiro.”
